Tracking lightning in Canada: quick answers

Where the map works, how to follow a storm near you and how to watch the cottage while you are in the city.

Does Lightning Alerts work in Canada?

Yes. The live map and alerts cover southern Canada, where most Canadians live: from Victoria and Vancouver to St. John's, and north to about Fort McMurray. The territories, the far north of the provinces and British Columbia's north and west coast are outside the map. Recent ground-reaching and intracloud strikes appear on the map, and on a phone set to Canada, distances show in km.

How do I follow a storm near me?

Open the live map and tap Radar to see the rain around the strikes, then play the radar to see which way the storm has moved. Tap Find and choose Closest to me: the map jumps to the nearest strike, and its details show how far away it is in km and how long ago it struck.

See how far away the lightning is

Can I see where lightning struck this week?

Yes. Tap Find, then the row under Strike history, to see the last 7 days around My Location or your saved place, with each storm and how close its closest strike came. Tap an hour in the chart to see only that hour's strikes on the map.

Look back at past strikes

Can I get alerts for the cottage while I am in the city?

Yes. Save the cottage as your saved place and turn on Lightning alerts. My Location and the saved place each get their own alert distance, from 5 to 50 km, so an alert tells you when lightning is detected near the cottage in Muskoka while you are at work in Toronto. Tap the alert to see its closest strike.
